Old Friend

“Hello, old friend,” I said.

“I’ve been around for some time, yes. But ‘friend’?” he asked.

“Well, we’ve known each other for years. We might not have gotten along, but surely there’s some relationship there somewhere,” I said.

“Relationship eh? I guess you could call it that. Though it’s probably more parasitic than symbiotic,” he said.

“True that,” I said.

There was an awkward silence.

“So why did you call?” he asked.

“Nothing much. Just the usual. Seeing other people with their loved ones. Seeing people happy. Seeing people moving on with their lives. I just thought I should reminisce a bit. It’s been a while, after all,” I said.

“And what took you so long?” he asked.

“To do what?” I asked.

“To call,” he said.

“Oh,” I said. “I had other pursuits I guess.”

“How worldly,” he said.

“Nods,” I said.

There was another silence. Though it wasn’t so awkward this time. The familiarity comes back quickly.

“You’ve changed,” I said.

“I have?” he said. “Well, I guess I have. It’s been almost a year, after all.”

“You’ve become… quieter,” I said.

“And you’ve become more resigned,” he said.

“But not hopeless,” I said.

“Not yet,” he said. “But then, perhaps you never will be.”

I said nothing.

“So what are you going to do now? It’s almost Christmas again already,” he asked.

“Wait, I guess. That’s what Advent is for,” I said.
