Chappie (2015)

Rating: 6/10

Equal parts laughable and heart-rending, Chappie both shines and fails. While it does not shy away from grappling with reality’s harsh assault on the innocence of a ‘newborn’ machine, the script is also simplistic in adopting a Cartesian duality as a deus ex machina. Dev Patel puts up a decent performance, but his supporting cast is weak and/or their characters are weakly written. In particular, the antagonist played by Hugh Jackman is unbelievable.
